I’ve been reading Dan Martell, ‘Buy Back Your Time: Get Unstuck, Reclaim Your Freedom, and Build Your Empire‘
“If you find yourself dreading work—because you know you have a stack of emails to respond to, new fires to put out, and a dozen clients, customers, and employees waiting to dump work on your lap—and then dreading coming home—because you’re exhausted, stressed, and still thinking about all that’s left at work—then this book is for you.”
“The little-known secret to reaching the next stage of your business is spending your time on only the tasks that: (a) you excel at, (b) you truly enjoy, and (c) add the highest value (usually in the form of revenue) to your business. Likely, two to three tasks fit that description. Every other task you’re handling is slowing your growth and sucking the life from you, and you should clear it from your calendar.”
The good news? You get to chose as a business owner – even though sometimes it doesn’t feel that way!
Leveraging marketing for business growth can really help you break free from the treadmill and create sustainable, scalable success. Let’s explore how.
1. Understand the Power of Marketing
First, it’s crucial to grasp that marketing is more than just promotion. It’s about understanding your customers, their needs and wants, and how your product or service fits into that equation. It’s about delivering value and building relationships.
In the words of Peter Drucker, “The aim of marketing is to know and understand the customer so well the product or service fits him and sells itself.”
2. Develop a Marketing Strategy
Strategy is key. A well-defined marketing strategy serves as a roadmap to your business growth. It outlines your unique value proposition, target audience, key marketing channels, and tactics. A good strategy should be flexible enough to adapt to changes in your business environment while keeping you focused on your goals.
When you’re developing your marketing strategy, begin by clearly defining your business goals. These could be increasing sales, building brand awareness, expanding into a new market, or improving customer loyalty. Your marketing goals should support your overall business objectives.
Remember, a marketing strategy is not a set-it-and-forget-it tool. It should be revisited and revised regularly based on your business’s performance and changes in the market environment. Regularly analysing your marketing efforts and adjusting your strategy as needed will help you stay on the path to growth.
A well-crafted marketing strategy can be the blueprint that guides your business off the ‘hours-for-money’ treadmill and onto a path of scalable, sustainable growth.
3. Leverage Content Marketing
Content marketing is a powerful tool to step off the ‘hours-for-money’ treadmill. By creating valuable, relevant content that attracts and engages your target audience, you can build trust, increase visibility, and convert prospects into customers. According to the Content Marketing Institute, content marketing generates over three times as many leads as outbound marketing and costs 62% less. It’s a long-term strategy that can deliver ongoing returns.
My absolute favourite book (which I’ve rad more than once!) on this, that we share with our members, is “They Ask. You Answer” By Marcus Sheridan. Marcus took his failing, recession hit fibre-glass swimming pool business, from near collapse to multi-million dollar success by giving answers to all the possible questions potential customers could ask. He filled his website with GREAT CONTENT – relevant, customers focussed videos and articles. Google loved it.
You can do the same to stand out in your local market, especially in NZ where audience sizes are so much smaller and not many businesses are doing this.
4. Harness the Power of Automation
Marketing automation can be a game-changer for small businesses. It allows you to streamline and automate marketing tasks, freeing up your time without sacrificing results. From email marketing campaigns to social media posting and lead generation, automation tools can help you maintain a consistent marketing presence even when you’re not actively working. AI will MASSIVELY change how you can run your business and multiple your outputs. Learn, play with the new tools and spend time understanding how the technology can elevate and magnify your success. This is not just for big companies. AI can help every business owners. Be the one in your space to embrace the opportunity.
5. Optimise for Conversion
Driving traffic to your website is great, but if that traffic isn’t converting into customers, it’s not contributing to your business growth. Conversion rate optimisation (CRO) involves analysing your website and marketing efforts to identify obstacles to conversion and making necessary adjustments. Even minor tweaks to your call-to-action, website layout, or checkout process can result in significant increases in conversion. Read ‘They Ak You Answer’ book linked above to make your website stand out, drive more traffic and convert potential customers, simply through being SUPER HELPFUL!
6. Encourage Customer Advocacy
Happy customers can be your best marketers. Encouraging customer reviews, referrals, and social media shares can amplify your marketing efforts and attract new customers. In fact, Nielsen reports that 92% of people trust recommendations from friends and family over any other type of advertising. Building a loyal customer base can provide a steady stream of new business without additional work hours on your part.
Stepping off the ‘hours-for-money’ treadmill isn’t about working less; it’s about working smarter. By leveraging marketing for business growth, you can maximise your efforts, build a sustainable business, and finally break free from the cycle of trading time for money.
In the words of Bill Gates, “Automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. Automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.”
It’s time to magnify your results and work smarter.
